Sharp-Tailed Sandpiper

Our ward is named after the sharp-tailed sandpiper, the signature species that earned a Ramsar listing to recognise and protect the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands. These wetlands, remnants of the Carrum Carrum Swamp that once spanned over 4,000 hectares, attract 190 bird species. The sharp-tailed sandpiper is a small to medium migratory wader that breeds in Siberia during the summer and migrates to Australia for wintering, highlighting the wetlands' crucial role in the bird's migratory path.
