Running for City of Kingston in Sandpiper Ward

Hi, I am Kirralee Ashworth-Collett

A local community voice!

Running in the October 2024 local government elections in the City of Kingston for Sandpiper Ward which includes the following suburbs:

EDITHVALE - CHELSEA HEIGHTS - CHELSEA - ASPENDALE GARDENS

  • I am 100% independent and self-funded. I have never been part of any political party and am standing as a local resident wanting to represent our community with a strong, authentic voice. I am taking no donations, ensuring that my decisions and actions are driven only by the best interests of the residents and businesses of Sandpiper Ward. My commitment is to you, my neighbours and local businesses, and to making our community a better place for everyone.

  • I am a founding member & President of the Edithvale Collective, a grassroots initiative that wants to revitalise the suburb through community-led placemaking. My leadership has focused on building strong community connections, and managing projects like pop-up parks and murals. I am extremely proud that we secured $2.3 million in funding for future shopping village revitalisation.

  • As a committee member of the Edithvale Life Saving Club, I am part of the decision-making and strategic planning team at the club. I organise social events to bring our members together, and help with hall rentals for community activities. I also act as the Facility Maintenance manager. Additionally, I serve as the Child Protection Officer for the Nippers program, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for our young participants.

WHAT’S IMPORTANT

  • SHOPPING VILLAGES REVITALISATION

When local businesses flourish, the whole community benefits. By making local shopping areas appealing, well-designed, and well-maintained, we create spaces where our community can feel a sense of pride. We need to create shopping areas in Edithvale and Chelsea Heights with consideration for the people who use them, ensuring they are accessible, safe, and inviting for everyone. I am here to continue advocating for the best solutions for everyone in the community, creating vibrant shopping villages that locals want to visit to support local businesses to thrive.

  • PLAYGROUNDS & YOUTH ACTIVITY SPACES

Every child in Sandpiper should have the opportunity to walk to a nearby playground within 10 minutes. Currently, there is a significant shortfall in playgrounds in the southern areas of Edithvale, with only 70% of residents within walking distance of one. We also need more play spaces for older children, such as bike/BMX jump facilities near Long Beach trail. This gap affects social unity and inclusion, as well as limiting free spaces for children to stay healthy, active, and connected.

  • STORMWATER AND DRAINS INRASTRUCTURE

It’s crucial to invest in stormwater infrastructure for the Sandpiper ward, as our communities are situated around the Edithvale Wetlands. As urban development and climate change pose challenges, protecting this natural ecosystem is essential. Enhancing these assets through strategic infrastructure investments will help to safeguard our community against future risks, ensuring a resilient environment that benefits both current and future generations.

  • GETTING THE BASICS RIGHT

Focusing on maintaining footpaths, improving roads, and ensuring safe, accessible parking. Especially in busy areas, parking design and permitted zones for residents play a crucial role in reducing congestion. Clear and well-planned parking solutions help locals access their homes while preventing overflow issues during summer peak times. By committing to these fundamental needs, we can make our streets safer, more functional, and more convenient for everyone in the community.

  • BEACH BINS

I’ve been hearing from many of you and share your concerns about what awaits us in the upcoming summer months with the influx of people. The lack of bins and proper waste management, especially in high-traffic areas, is worrying. One major issue is the bin gap between Bristol Ave and Bank Road—a 9-minute walk without a single bin. Without meaningful consultation on this matter, it feels like we’re unprepared for the challenges ahead.

  • ROSSDALE GOLF COURSE

The potential redevelopment of Rossdale Golf Course has raised significant concerns for many in our community, especially regarding the impact on green spaces and wildlife corridors. While the decision to rezone the land is ultimately in the hands of the state government, I believe it’s crucial that we protect our valuable green spaces for passive recreation and environmental preservation, especially because they adjoin the wetlands. If elected, I will continue advocating for the community’s voice to be heard.

I am driven and deeply committed to our community, believing in our ability to create lasting positive change in how we live, interact and care for one another and our environment.

Reach out and share your insights on the key issues affecting our community.
